Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), the world’s largest express transportation company, has officially opened a new state-of-the-art facility in Bilbao, Spain. The investment marks a significant step in strengthening the company’s operational presence in Southern Europe and meeting the growing demand for logistics and e-commerce solutions.
The new Bilbao facility spans 2,700 square meters of warehouse space, almost 2,000 square meters larger than the previous site, alongside 400 square meters of modern office space distributed over two floors. Designed with advanced infrastructure, the site doubles the company’s previous sorting capacity, enabling the processing of up to 1,500 packages per hour. To support this scale of operations, the station features 27 loading docks, an increase of 20 compared to the former facility.
“This new complex represents a significant investment in our operational capabilities and allows us to enhance our service offerings for customers, supporting their international aspirations and operational needs,” said Ian Silverton, Managing Director of Ground Operations, FedEx Spain and Portugal. “With the Bilbao station, we considerably increase our operational footprint and improve efficiency, while also enabling us to handle greater volumes.”
The addition of the Bilbao station strengthens FedEx’s footprint in the Basque Country, where the company already operates facilities in Vitoria and San Sebastian. The Vitoria air gateway plays a particularly critical role, ensuring next-day connectivity to Europe and America. Together, these locations now offer a combined sorting capacity of up to 6,000 packages per hour, positioning FedEx to better support businesses and individuals across the region.
FedEx’s commitment to Spain extends well beyond the Basque region. The company operates five air gateways in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Vitoria, along with two major road hubs in Madrid and Barcelona. Across the country, FedEx maintains 26 operational stations, forming an extensive network designed to support domestic and international commerce.
By investing in advanced infrastructure in Bilbao, FedEx underscores its long-term commitment to Southern Europe, while enhancing service capabilities and ensuring resilience in a logistics landscape increasingly shaped by the rise of e-commerce.
