AviusULD has signed a strategic agreement with DHL Express to deploy 30,000 SmartULD devices in the first phase of a global rollout, marking the largest use of energy-harvesting ULD tracking technology in the air cargo sector. The initiative aims to improve safety, efficiency, sustainability, and the utilisation of ULDs across DHL’s global network.

The AviusULD SmartULD devices offer real-time tracking of location, movement, and safety conditions without the need for airport-installed readers or battery replacement. Using LTE connectivity, assisted GNSS, and indoor Wi-Fi positioning, the technology provides infrastructure-free visibility across DHL Express operations.

The rollout is expected to reduce damages and losses, minimise repositioning moves, and enhance overall operational efficiency. The collaboration also includes Fire Tags to detect off-gassing from lithium-ion batteries before thermal events, and Occupancy Tags to confirm whether containers are empty or loaded, preventing missed cargo and unnecessary emissions.

Charles Drummond, CEO of AviusULD, said the deal is a landmark moment for the ULD industry and praised DHL Express for its leadership in digital cargo transformation. Frank Steinert, Senior Director of Global Network Equipment at DHL Express, described the SmartULD technology as a breakthrough that will help the company improve operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability, with plans to expand the programme across all reusable air cargo equipment.

The agreement reflects a growing trend in air cargo towards data-driven asset management, aiming to reduce total cost of ownership while enhancing safety and ESG performance. The SmartULD suite also ensures interoperability with existing BLE fleets and legacy tracking systems, providing a scalable solution for future phases of deployment.
