Air Canada earns CEIV Lithium Batteries certification

Air Canada has secured the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) CEIV Lithium Batteries certification for its cargo operations, strengthening its capabilities in handling specialised shipments while reaffirming its commitment to safety, regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

The certification recognises the airline's adherence to globally accepted standards for the safe handling, storage and transportation of lithium battery shipments, a rapidly expanding segment of the air cargo market driven by growing demand from the consumer electronics, medical technology, electric vehicle and energy storage industries.

Janet Wallace, Managing Director, Cargo Operations and Transformation at Air Canada, said, “Achieving IATA CEIV Lithium Batteries certification is an important milestone for Air Canada Cargo and reflects the strength of our people, processes and operational discipline.”

According to Wallace, the certification provides customers with greater confidence that their lithium battery shipments will be handled safely, efficiently and in compliance with stringent global standards, as demand for transporting complex and highly regulated cargo by air continues to grow.

Air Canada achieved the certification after completing a comprehensive review of its cargo operating procedures and successfully undergoing an independent IATA audit of its documented processes, operational procedures and cargo activities, including an on-site assessment of its Montreal (YUL) cargo facility. As part of the process, key personnel, including Dangerous Goods specialists from warehouse operations and representatives from Cargo Operations and Transformation Management, also completed specialised IATA training on the safe handling of lithium battery shipments.

The CEIV Lithium Batteries certification adds to Air Canada’s existing CEIV Pharma and CEIV Live Animals accreditations, further strengthening its expertise in transporting specialised, sensitive and highly regulated cargo across its global network. Backed by service to more than 450 destinations worldwide, the airline combines an extensive international network with globally recognised safety and quality standards for handling complex shipments.
