Lufthansa Cargo completes LUG acquisition
The acquisition strengthens cargo handling infrastructure in Germany, expands capacity and creates new growth opportunities for LUG.
Lufthansa Cargo has completed its acquisition of LUG aircargo handling following the receipt of all necessary antitrust approvals, making the cargo handling company a wholly owned subsidiary.
The acquisition agreement with the Dettmer Group was signed on September 7, 2026. The move is aimed at strengthening Lufthansa Cargo's cargo handling infrastructure in Germany while supporting its long-term growth and competitiveness.
LUG will continue to operate as an independent company under its existing brand within the Lufthansa Cargo group. Existing customer contracts and business relationships will remain unchanged, while the company will continue handling cargo for other airlines as part of its business model.
Joining Lufthansa Cargo is also expected to create additional growth opportunities for LUG, enabling it to build on its existing handling capabilities, strengthen its position as a service partner and explore new business opportunities.
Frank Bauer, Chief Operations Officer of Lufthansa Cargo, said, “Completing this acquisition lays an important foundation for further growth and greater flexibility in our home market. This is about much more than additional space and capacity: LUG’s employees bring extensive expertise and many years of experience in air cargo handling. Their knowledge is highly valued by customers and essential to continued development. We warmly welcome our new colleagues and look forward to working together to seize the opportunities ahead for both companies. LUG will remain an independent partner for its existing and future customers.”
The additional handling capacity will complement Lufthansa Cargo’s existing infrastructure, including its LCCevo modernisation programme in Frankfurt, backed by an investment of approximately €600 million. These investments are aimed at enhancing the company's infrastructure and ensuring the continued delivery of reliable, high-quality services to customers.
With more than 60 years of experience in air cargo handling, LUG employs around 400 people. Its expertise across various cargo segments and understanding of the operational requirements of international airlines have helped establish long-standing customer relationships and maintain service quality. This experience will continue to support the company's growth and development within the Lufthansa Cargo group.
