FedEx and Dexterity expand physical AI deployment at Hagerstown hub

FedEx Corp. and Dexterity Inc. have announced a major expansion of their operational collaboration to deploy physical artificial intelligence systems for autonomous trailer loading at the FedEx Hagerstown Hub in Maryland. Building upon several years of joint development, rigorous testing, and operational validation, this expanded deployment moves the programme beyond its initial pilot phase into full-scale production within a high-volume logistics environment. The initiative aims to enhance safety, operational consistency, and long-term network efficiency across the parcel logistics ecosystem.

Trailer loading remains one of the most physically demanding, strenuous, and complex workflows in parcel logistics, making it fundamental to day-to-day operations. The task demands high levels of physical strength, endurance, and real-time problem-solving capabilities from site personnel, representing one of the primary operational areas where workforce teams actively seek additional technological support. With tens of thousands of commercial trailers loaded daily across the extensive FedEx network in the United States, this specific process has historically proven exceptionally difficult to automate using standard or traditional mechanical solutions.

Through its strategic partnership with Dexterity, an enterprise physical AI company focused on intelligent robotics for complex industrial applications, FedEx is establishing how physical AI performs under demanding real-world conditions. Furthermore, the collaboration demonstrates how autonomous technology integrates into broader logistics operations, including destination planning, trailer assignment, fleet maintenance, and workforce management processes. The deployment at the Hagerstown Hub serves as a real-world testbed for scaling intelligent automation across complex delivery networks.

At the core of Dexterity’s trailer loading technology is Mech, a dual-armed superhumanoid robot engineered explicitly for heavy industrial tasks. Designed with a compact operational footprint, Mech is agile enough to manoeuvre effectively inside standard commercial trailers. The system is powered by Foresight, Dexterity’s proprietary world model for physical AI, which enables autonomous machines to perceive, reason, and make dynamic decisions in fast-changing environments. By combining advanced vision, depth perception, and tactile touch sensors, Foresight accurately predicts how physical actions will affect surrounding objects and space. In autonomous trailer loading, the AI reasons across three spatial dimensions and time to optimise package placement for maximum space utilisation, structural stability, and handling speed.
