FedEx expands Duiven road hub with €46 million investment
The expansion will raise palletised freight handling capacity by over 50%, add 65 dock doors and improve network efficiency during peak demand periods.
FedEx has announced a €46 million ($54.1 million) investment to expand its road hub in Duiven, the Netherlands, increasing freight capacity and improving operational efficiency across its European road network.
The investment includes the procurement and development of a neighbouring facility, which will significantly increase capacity at the Duiven road hub. FedEx said the expansion reinforces the Netherlands’ position as a key logistics gateway in Europe and supports the company’s continued growth in the premium international parcel and freight market.
According to Safia Ladhari, managing director, network operations at FedEx, the Duiven hub is one of the largest and most technologically advanced road hubs within the company’s European road network. She said its strategic location and connectivity to every other FedEx road hub across Europe make it central to the company’s European service offering.
FedEx said its European road network supports growth in the premium airfreight segment by enabling intercontinental airfreight shipments to move efficiently across Europe by road alongside air operations. The company described this integrated truck–fly–truck model as an important part of its freight services, offering customers a reliable and cost-efficient solution.
As part of the expansion, palletised freight handling capacity at the Duiven hub will increase by more than 50%. The facility will also add 65 dock doors, taking the total number of dock doors on site to 265.
FedEx said the additional capacity will allow more freight shipments to move directly from customers to the hub, reducing reliance on first- and last-mile locations. The company said this will help reduce pressure across the network and improve service reliability, particularly during peak periods.
The first phase of the expansion will focus on the initial requirements needed to operate the facility. Later phases will focus on operational improvements, including better connectivity between the new and existing buildings and further efficiency enhancements.
Ladhari said the Duiven facility recorded strong growth in parcel and freight volumes over the past year, particularly during peak periods such as the year-end season, adding that the expansion would help support customers through continued growth.
