Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has partnered with HKT to launch Hong Kong’s first air cargo terminal powered by a 5G private network. This strategic collaboration will boost Hactl’s automation capabilities and enhance global logistics efficiency, further strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation and logistics hub, according to an official release by Hactl.

In 2024, Hactl handled over 40% of the approximately 4.9 million tonnes of cargo processed by Hong Kong International Airport, the world’s busiest international cargo hub. The introduction of a high-speed, ultra-low latency, secure, and reliable 5G private network will modernise terminal operations at Hactl, creating a smart, fully interconnected ecosystem.

The deployment of the 5G private network will bring tangible improvements to Hactl’s operations. Autonomous Electric Tractors (AETs) will operate with real-time coordination, allowing them to transport cargo efficiently while adapting to traffic conditions and safety protocols with minimal human input.

Security will be strengthened through AI-powered patrol robots, which will monitor cargo areas continuously and stream live video to Hactl’s Security Control Centre via a dedicated 5G connection, enabling immediate detection and response to potential threats, the release added.

“Hactl’s success to date is firmly based on its enthusiastic adoption of the very latest technologies throughout its business. This new private 5G installation is our latest initiative, building the essential foundation to support our future use of robotics, autonomous vehicles and digitalisation of processes throughout our SuperTerminal 1 facility,” says Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of Hactl.

Warehouse automation will also benefit, with a 5G-connected Smart Cargo Locating system enabling real-time positioning and automated tracking of goods. Smart Forklifts will interact with each other and the central control system to optimise workflow and reduce manual errors.

“Connectivity is of paramount importance for digital transformation in the air cargo industry. HKT is committed to leveraging our private 5G network solutions to facilitate air cargo terminal operators to achieve real-time automation, AI-driven logistics, and enhanced security. Our collaboration with Hactl represents a major step towards next-generation air cargo logistics, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a global leader in smart cargo operations,” says Steve Ng, Managing Director of Commercial Group, HKT.
