Airbus unveils first A350F test aircraft in ‘Flying Parcel’ livery

Airbus’ first A350F test aircraft has rolled out in its unique “flying parcel” livery, with its maiden flight targeted for later this year.

Airbus has unveiled the first test aircraft of its A350F freighter programme at its Toulouse final assembly site, giving the new-generation cargo aircraft its first full visual identity ahead of its maiden flight. The aircraft has been painted in a distinctive “flying parcel” livery, with its fuselage designed to resemble a giant delivery box. Shipping labels run along the length of the aircraft, while its main cargo door and lower cargo access panels feature “open here for business” markings.

The aircraft rollout marks another step towards the A350F’s flight-test campaign. Airbus continues to target a first flight before the end of 2026, while Reuters reported that the manufacturer is tentatively targeting late September for the maiden flight, although the timing could move depending on technical and weather conditions.

The aircraft’s striking appearance has an unusual backstory. Airbus launched a public design competition for the A350F livery in 2022, attracting more than 4,000 entries. The final design combined two winning submissions from John Feehan, a 57-year-old graphic designer from Dublin, and Canadian brothers Quinnten and Ellisten Iversen, aged 16 and 12 respectively.

Their combined concept was subsequently unveiled at the Paris Air Show in 2023. Three years later, the winning idea has moved from the drawing board to a real aircraft, becoming the first A350F to enter the flight-test programme. The A350F is Airbus' latest attempt to establish a stronger position in the large widebody freighter market, which has traditionally been dominated by Boeing aircraft. Derived from the A350 widebody family, the freighter is designed to carry up to 111 tonnes of payload over a range of up to 8,700 kilometres. It is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines.

More than 70% of the aircraft uses advanced materials, helping make the A350F significantly lighter than comparable aircraft. Airbus says the aircraft will deliver up to a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared with previous-generation freighters with a similar payload-range capability.

One of the A350F’s most important design features is its main-deck cargo door. At 4.3 metres wide, Airbus describes it as the largest main-deck cargo door in the industry. The door is manufactured from composite materials and is designed to make the loading and unloading of oversized cargo faster and safer.

Airbus has 107 firm orders for the A350F as of July, from airlines including Atlas Air, Etihad, Starlux, Air China, Cathay, and Korean Air. Atlas Air's order for 20 freighters is the largest for this aircraft type so far.

With the first aircraft now assembled and painted, Airbus is moving towards the most important phase of the programme: flight testing. The campaign will test the aircraft's performance, systems, handling characteristics, cargo configuration and operational capabilities before certification.

Reuters reported that Airbus is aiming for a maiden flight around late September, although the schedule remains subject to change. Airbus itself has continued to publicly maintain its target of a first flight before the end of 2026, followed by commercial entry scheduled for the second half of 2027.

The manufacturer is targeting commercial entry into service in the second half of 2027. The programme will therefore be closely watched by the global air cargo industry, particularly as airlines look for more fuel-efficient freighters capable of carrying heavy and oversized cargo over long distances.

For Airbus, the A350F represents more than a new aircraft programme. It is an attempt to bring the efficiency and technology of the A350 family into the dedicated freighter market and now, with the first test aircraft wearing a giant parcel on its fuselage, Airbus' newest freighter finally looks the part.
