UPS opens $80mn Clark airport hub to accelerate global trade
UPS has opened a state-of-the-art, $80 million logistics hub at Clark International Airport to expand processing capacity and accelerate global supply chains.
The landscape of global logistics witnessed a massive upgrade as UPS, the world’s leading provider of complex, premium logistics, officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art facility at Clark International Airport in the Philippines. Representing a formidable financial commitment of over $80 million, this newly constructed logistics hub is specifically designed to fortify international supply chains and deliver unprecedented service enhancements for customers operating across more than 1,100 global trade lanes. In an era where trade complexity is constantly evolving, this facility stands as a critical asset for businesses seeking faster, more reliable connections to consumer markets worldwide.
The sheer scale of the new UPS Clark hub is a testament to the company's aggressive expansion strategy in the region. Spanning an impressive 30,000 square metres, equivalent to roughly 323,000 square feet, the cutting-edge complex is 15 times larger than the previous facility it replaces. This massive spatial upgrade directly translates to a staggering increase in operational throughput. The hub elevates the average daily volume of processed packages to 46,000, while pushing its maximum processing threshold to an astonishing 15,000 packages per hour. Beyond sheer speed and volume, this expansion introduces highly specialised handling capabilities tailored for the healthcare, high-tech, and manufacturing sectors, which frequently require meticulous management of time-sensitive and temperature-controlled shipments.
Operationally, UPS is now executing 170 flight segments into and out of Clark every single week. This high-frequency schedule seamlessly connects businesses operating across the Asia Pacific region, India, Europe, and the United States, facilitating deliveries in as little as one business day. Furthermore, the economic ripple effect of this localised investment is substantial, with the facility's operations directly creating nearly 600 new jobs for the local workforce.
“This is a very special moment for our customers and our company,” said Russell Reed, managing director, UPS Philippines. “To enhance services across more than 1,100 trade lanes is incredibly exciting, especially at a time when businesses are facing a unique set of challenges.
“When we opened our first Clark hub in 2002, we always had growth in mind – for our customers, our people and the local community,” continued Reed. “We’re proud to have called Clark home for nearly quarter of a century and we’re delighted that the new UPS Clark hub will continue to provide people and businesses, both in the Philippines and across Asia, with international trade growth opportunities for decades more to come.”
The ripple effects of these service enhancements are set to be felt across the globe. Key operational improvements enabled by the new UPS Clark hub include significantly faster transit times. Customers can expect up to two days faster delivery to and from eastern China and other major markets within the Asia Pacific. There is also an acceleration of up to two days in service speeds between India and several Southeast Asian markets. Additionally, the hub delivers sweeping improvements to and from the Philippines on numerous trade lanes worldwide, offering extended pickup cutoff times and earlier delivery times in cities across the region.
“When we first announced plans to build our new Clark hub in 2024, it was the beginning of a sustained, multi-year investment strategy to strengthen our Asia Pacific network and give our customers faster connections to support growing trade flows across the region,” said Bernard Jiang, president UPS Asia Pacific.
“Asia Pacific has been the heartbeat of global trade for years. There are still plenty of growth opportunities for the region’s businesses and a lot of untapped potential. Clark is the latest in a series of recent major investments UPS has made in its Asia Pacific network and there’s more to come as we continue to speed up connectivity, unlock trade growth opportunities, improve service reliability and strengthen supply chains for our customers,” added Jiang.
Modern logistics requires cutting-edge sustainability and precision, and the new Clark facility delivers on both fronts. The sustainability-certified hub houses three advanced refrigeration and freezer units, capable of maintaining temperatures ranging from -20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Paired with dedicated re-icing capabilities and advanced UPS Premier RFID technology, the centre ensures priority handling and end-to-end visibility for highly critical and fragile healthcare shipments.
Furthermore, the facility heavily integrates smart technology to streamline its workflows. It features a highly advanced automated sorting system capable of efficiently processing up to 9,000 small packages every hour. On the tarmac, ramp operations have been entirely modernised with a fleet of electric ground servicing equipment, which includes eco-friendly cargo tractors, belt and cargo loaders, ground processing units, and forklifts, severely cutting down the carbon footprint of the hub.
This monumental launch in the Philippines is the latest in a relentless series of strategic investments made by UPS to reinforce its broader Asia Pacific network. By proactively expanding its infrastructure, UPS is ensuring that its customers can confidently navigate and manage shifting trade routes, changing regulations, and unpredictable supply chain disruptions. The company has demonstrated intense regional momentum this year alone: in March, UPS opened its largest logistics centre in the Asia Pacific in Taiwan and broke ground on a highly anticipated new hub at Hong Kong International Airport. Following that, in April, UPS completed a major expansion of its hub at Incheon Airport, solidifying its dominant footprint across the global logistics landscape.
