DHL Global Forwarding and Prada Group have joined hands to work towards reducing air freight emissions. As part of this partnership, the Italian fashion brand has invested in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits through DHL's GoGreen Plus service, marking its first-ever investment in SAF.

SAF, derived from waste sources like used cooking oil and food waste, has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional aviation fuel. This powerful collaboration has already led to a substantial reduction of around 4,500 metric tons of CO2e in 2023 by Prada Group, a significant step towards a more sustainable future.

"In today's world, it is crucial to establish a clear roadmap for decarbonisation that involves carriers, SAF manufacturers, regulators, and customers. We are proud that Prada Group has chosen to leverage the expertise of DHL Global Forwarding to form a partnership that we believe will drive the much-needed change forward," said Mario Zini, Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding Italy, in a recent press release.

DHL uses SAF—certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)—for Prada Group, ensuring compliance with rigorous sustainability standards. This certification system promotes sustainability, traceability, and climate-friendly supply chains, covering various materials from sustainable agricultural biomass to recycled carbon-based materials.

With a workforce of about 395,000 employees across 220 countries and territories, DHL is committed to achieving net-zero emissions logistics by 2050 while ensuring secure and reliable global trade flows. The logistics company has also recently collaborated with Vitesco Technologies to enhance operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across Vitesco Technologies' European operations.

The press release stated that Prada Group had adopted the GHG Protocol for its GHG Inventory, but it was mentioned that the protocol doesn't include reductions from SAF purchased for Scope 3 via book & claim. It indicates that the emissions saved from this initiative need to be factored into the total carbon footprint calculation.
