Global ground handling services provider dnata has announced it will cease cargo handling operations and terminate the lease of its 12,000 sqm facility at Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN), both effective 31 December 2025.
The Emirates subsidiary confirmed to The STAT Trade Times that the decision follows what the company describes as a “thorough review” of its local business operations, which factored in market conditions, commercial performance, and future outlook.
“Despite our best efforts and significant investment, our operations and growth potential have remained constrained by market conditions,” said the dnata spokesperson.
“As a result, we have ultimately concluded that our operations are not financially viable over the long term. We have formally notified the airport of our intention to cease operations.”
dnata entered the German market in 2022 by acquiring the exclusive operator of the 12,000 sqm Cologne Bonn Cargo Centre, Wisskirchen Handling Services and has handled freight for around 20 airlines at CGN, including a multi-year contract with Maersk Air Freight. In the financial year 2022-23, dnata handled nearly 60,000 tonnes of cargo in Cologne.
The move marks a significant development in dnata’s European cargo operations as it is also exiting the German market. Beyond Cologne Bonn, dnata handles cargo at major hubs in Europe, including, Amsterdam Schiphol in the Netherlands, Zurich and Geneva in Switzerland, and Brussels in Belgium.
The Dubai-based company formally notified Cologne-Bonn Airport of its decision and is now working with the airport authorities to find a successor that can continue to operate the cargo facility.
“In the meantime, services continue without interruption, and we remain focused on ensuring a smooth and professional transition for everyone involved.”
dnata has informed the local Works Council and is engaging with staff to provide support throughout the transition.
“Our primary concern is our team in Cologne,” the spokesperson said.
“We are committed to managing the process with care, transparency, and in full compliance with all applicable regulations.”
“We remain in close dialogue with our employees, customers, and partners as the transition progresses.”
