Air Canada has partnered with Unilode Aviation Solutions and OnAsset Intelligence to roll out a Smart ULD (Unit Load Device) programme that promises to transform how air cargo is tracked and managed. The initiative integrates advanced digital readers into Air Canada’s aircraft, connecting airline operations with aviation-compliant tracking systems and a global fleet of IoT-enabled ULDs.

This strategic collaboration is designed to provide seamless end-to-end visibility, real-time tracking, and data-driven decision-making across Air Canada’s airfreight operations. By utilizing Unilode’s pool of smart containers and OnAsset’s IoT tracking technology, the program enhances the accuracy and efficiency of cargo movements, from the warehouse to the final destination.

The Smart ULD programme will leverage shared data infrastructure to enable more effective cargo monitoring, improving transparency, asset utilization, and operational efficiency. The digital readers installed onboard will continuously collect and transmit location and condition data, such as temperature, humidity, and movement, making it possible for stakeholders to monitor shipments in real-time.

This initiative aligns with Air Canada Cargo’s goal to drive innovation and sustainability in logistics, as smarter ULD management reduces turnaround times, minimizes delays, and optimizes fleet usage.

Unilode, known for managing one of the world’s largest ULD fleets, provides the backbone for scalable deployment, while OnAsset, a leader in sensor-based tracking, ensures data integrity and regulatory compliance. The integration of these technologies represents a significant step forward for the air cargo industry, particularly as demands for faster, more transparent, and more secure logistics continue to rise.

With this program, Air Canada positions itself at the forefront of digital airfreight transformation, setting new standards for visibility, reliability, and customer service in cargo logistics.
