Boeing 777 Freighter Boom: Mammoth Gets FAA Approval | Air Cargo Shift

Update: 2026-05-01 11:09 GMT

The future of air cargo is rapidly changing, and older passenger aircraft are now being transformed into powerful freighters.

In a major milestone, Mammoth Freighters has received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for its 777-200LR Mammoth Freighter. This approval-known as a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)-allows the aircraft to enter commercial service, making it the first passenger-to- freighter conversion programme for this aircraft type.

What makes this even more significant is that the widely used Boeing 777F is based on the same platform as the Boeing 777-200LR, proving its strong cargo capabilities.

With Qatar Airways Cargo signing on as the launch customer, the programme is already gaining industry confidence.

At the same time, the Boeing 777-300ER conversion space is heating up. Companies like Israel Aerospace Industries and Kansas Modification Center are competing with different engineering approaches to replace aging freighters such as the Boeing 747-400F.

Meanwhile, Challenge Group is expanding its fleet by acquiring Boeing 777 aircraft from Jet Airways for conversion-highlighting strong long-term demand for widebody freighters.
