SATS Ltd announced the launch of its Hub Handler of the Future programme through its SATS Singapore Hub (SG Hub) to meet the growing needs of next-generation mega airports.

The programme focuses on how the company will use automation, artificial intelligence, operational innovation, sustainability, and workforce development to transform air cargo and ground handling operations as global air cargo volumes are projected to reach 72.5 million tonnes in 2025.

The programme draws on SG Hub’s experience at Changi Airport to reimagine aviation solutions for large passenger and cargo operations. It aims to integrate automation and digital systems to improve efficiency, coordination, and operational readiness. It also includes initiatives to redesign jobs, enhance training, and collaborate with academic institutions to prepare the workforce for digital operations.

Under automation and AI integration, SATS is developing AI models that schedule staff and equipment deployment to improve turnaround predictability and on-time performance. The company is also participating in a trial of autonomous airside buses with SIA Engineering and Changi Airport to transport staff and using computer vision to provide real-time updates and detect potential handling errors to enhance ramp safety.

SATS is introducing workforce enablement initiatives that combine technical oversight and ground execution. Virtual and augmented reality simulations are being used for training in operational scenarios.

The company is working with Institutes of Higher Learning to co-develop digital aviation modules, micro-certifications, and AI prompt-engineering training. These efforts are designed to uplift role value, improve compensation, and create multi-skilled career pathways.

In cargo operations, SATS is expanding its specialised services. SATS Coolport is certified under IATA CEIV Pharma and CEIV Fresh standards, with real-time temperature and humidity monitoring to maintain cold-chain integrity.

The Build-Up Handling Centre, launched in April 2025, supports perishable and pharmaceutical cargo. SATS has also established dedicated e-commerce lines that integrate freight forwarding and cross-dock flow.

Through strategic partnerships, SATS is strengthening service capabilities. A partnership with Kuehne+Nagel launched in June 2025 provides expedited aircraft parts delivery for aircraft-on-ground needs.

Another collaboration with Sterling, a Kuehne+Nagel company, supports expedited airside handling for AOG shipments in Singapore and London Heathrow. A partnership with S. F. Express established an airside logistics centre at the Core A warehouse, reducing on-airport processing times from up to six hours to about two hours.

The company’s sustainability goals include achieving 70% electrification of ground support equipment by 2030, expanding solar energy systems across its facilities, and using AI-driven energy optimisation systems to manage power use in cold-chain and cargo handling operations.

SATS is investing S$250 million to modernise its air freight terminals and ground support infrastructure.

Henry Low, CEO of SATS Singapore Hub, said, “The Hub Handler of the Future underscores SATS’ ambition to be an industry leader for mega airports of the future. By integrating cutting-edge technologies and nurturing talent, we will help build resilient, agile, and sustainable hubs for tomorrow. At the heart of this transformation are our people—their dedication, adaptability, expertise and experience will drive our vision to be the Hub Handler of the Future.”

Established in 2024, the SATS Singapore Hub at Changi Airport anchors a network of more than 225 stations across 27 countries and serves as a strategic node in the company’s global operations.
