Menzies trials AI cargo technology at Heathrow
Menzies Aviation is testing AI-powered cargo measurement and build-up technology from CIND at Heathrow, aiming to improve cargo data accuracy, loading efficiency and flight safety.
Menzies Aviation has launched a proof-of-concept trial of AI-powered cargo measurement and build-up technology at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), in partnership with computer vision specialist CIND.
The trial will assess how automated cargo measurement, real-time visibility and build-up checks can improve data accuracy, operational efficiency and decision-making across the cargo handling process, from shipment arrival through aircraft loading.
As part of the initial phase, Menzies is deploying CIND’s Dimensioner In-Motion, which automatically measures cargo as it moves through the warehouse. The system captures information including pallet dimensions, weight, stackability and shipment references without requiring freight to be stopped or manually handled.
Menzies is also testing CIND’s ContourCheck during Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up. The technology creates a real-time visual model of cargo as it is loaded and checks it against the approved aircraft contour, allowing potential overhang or contour issues to be identified before loading.
The technologies are expected to help improve warehouse flows, load accuracy and ULD capacity utilisation, while reducing manual errors and last-minute adjustments and supporting safer aircraft loading.
The Heathrow trial will help Menzies evaluate the potential for wider deployment of the technology across its global cargo network as part of its focus on digitalisation and operational efficiency.
Rory Fidler, Senior Vice President Cargo Technology, Menzies Aviation, said, “Innovation is fundamental to how we are shaping the future of our cargo operations. This proof-of-concept deployment with CIND gives us the opportunity to test how reliable, real‑time data can transform the way we plan, load and manage cargo. The learnings from this pilot will help us assess the potential for wider application across our cargo network, supporting safer operations, smarter use of capacity and better decision‑making.”
Marcus Schelin, CEO of CIND, said the partnership with Menzies Aviation marks an important step in the company’s global expansion and strengthens its position in automated air-cargo measurement solutions. He added that the initial deployment will demonstrate the technology’s operational benefits while supporting safer, more efficient and data-driven cargo handling.
