Glauco Martinelli: A visionary pioneer in air cargo industry
Air cargo industry mourns Glauco Martinelli, ATC founder and pioneer, who shaped Italy’s GSA landscape with his vision.

The air cargo industry has lost one of its most influential figures with the passing of Glauco Martinelli on 27 March. As the founder of Air Transport Consultants (ATC), he played a key role in shaping the General Sales Agent (GSA) model in Italy, leaving behind a legacy that continues to define the sector today.
Martinelli’s career in air freight began in 1960 with BOAC before he moved on to South African Airways and Alitalia. His sharp business sense and deep understanding of the market made him stand out early on. He was quick to recognise industry shifts and seize new opportunities, a trait that later fuelled his entrepreneurial success.
In 1979, he took a bold step by founding ATC, likely Italy’s first GSA. At a time when the concept was still unfamiliar in the country, Martinelli saw its potential and turned his vision into reality. He secured Air Canada as ATC’s first airline partner, proving his ability to forge strong international relationships. Over the years, ATC became a trusted name in the industry, known for its reliability and commitment to excellence.
Under his leadership, ATC earned the title of Italy’s top GSA for more than a decade. He built the company not just as a business but as a benchmark for quality in the air cargo sector. His impact extended beyond his company—he played a major role in shaping industry standards and inspiring the next generation of air cargo professionals.
In 2012, always looking ahead, he made the strategic decision to integrate ATC into the ECS Group to strengthen its global presence. Around the same time, he passed the leadership to his son, Sauro Martinelli, ensuring continuity while allowing the company to embrace new challenges. Today, ATC is the largest GSA in Italy, a testament to his vision and determination.
Martinelli’s contributions to air cargo go far beyond business. He was a mentor, a leader, and a pioneer whose influence will be felt for years to come. His passion for the industry, his unwavering drive, and his ability to see opportunities where others saw obstacles made him a true trailblazer.
To his family, to Sauro, and to all those who had the privilege of working with him, we extend our deepest sympathies.
Thank you, Glauco, for everything you built and for the legacy you leave behind.
