February 10, 2018: Bombardier Transportation recently awarded a three-year contract to DHL Supply Chain to manage inbound logistics to its rail vehicles production site in Derby, United Kingdom.

Under the contract, DHL is expected to handle logistics for locomotive components worth £27 million every week. It involves collection of goods, warehousing, kitting, in-plant material movement and line feeding of parts to the car body shop, paint shop and final assembly lines.

DHL will deploy its Lead Logistics Partner (LLP) solution, which includes a control tower to manage the inbound supply of production components from Bombardier’s global supply chain to the Derby site.

It’s the only factory in the UK which is equipped to design, manufacture, assemble and test new trains.

Robert Moss, senior inventory manager of Bombardier Transportation said: “Having obtaining a number of large contracts recently, it’s crucial for us to have the logistics in place to support our growth. We are looking forward to working with DHL to accomplish the target of doubling the production of trains at Derby, from 11 train cars per week in 2017 to 22 by 2019.”

Martin Willmor, managing director, supply chain solutions of DHL Supply Chain said: “We are delighted to support Bombardier as it has an impressive growth story. We look forward to working with the Bombardier team in Derby, and are hopeful to replicate the UK model across all of its global sites.”
