British Airways has announced that CEO Alex Cruz, who took on the role in 2016, has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, but hasn’t given the reason for his departure.

He will be replaced by IAG’s Dublin-based airline Aer Lingus chief Sean Doyle, who will be the non-executive chairman during the transition period. He had taken the chief role in Dublin only in January 2019. He has previously spent around 20 years with the airline in various roles in the past including being the director of network, fleet and alliances.

The decision comes one month after Luis Gallego became the CEO of IAG to help them regain their footing after being severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Replacing long time CEO Willie Walsh, he did a lot of cost-cutting after Iberia Airlines merged with British Airways to make IAG.
