Episode 3: Can Air Cargo Lead the Way in Waste Management?
Welcome to the third episode of “Future of Transport: Innovative and Sustainable,” brought to you in partnership with Edmonton International Airport (YEG). This episode explores how the aviation industry, especially air cargo, is tackling waste as both passenger and cargo traffic continue to rise.
YEG leads with innovative practices like using CarbonCure technology in construction and recycling stormwater and materials to cut emissions. On the other hand, other airports like Hactl, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited, is also making waves by turning recycled plastic bottles into uniforms and using old uniforms to create upcycled cups.
Airlines are also making strides: LATAM Airlines aims for zero waste to landfill by 2027, British Airways recycles 40% of onboard waste and repurposes old fabrics into school uniforms, and Air France-KLM eliminates 1,300 tonnes of paper waste by switching to digital apps. Lufthansa Cargo upcycles old freight containers into travel trolleys, while Emirates turns retrofitted aircraft materials into luggage for charity initiatives.
These initiatives highlight the power of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainability across aviation.
Stay tuned as we continue to explore the latest sustainability innovations in partnership with Edmonton International Airport.
