Aramex and LODD Autonomous to test hybrid VTOL aircraft in UAE pilot
The pilot focuses on using Hili to transport shipments between Aramex hubs and distribution centres

Aramex and LODD Autonomous have signed a memorandum of understanding to test the use of Hili, a hybrid vertical take-off and landing cargo aircraft, within Aramex’s Middle East logistics network. The collaboration aims to study how unmanned aircraft can support middle-mile and last-mile deliveries in Abu Dhabi.
The pilot focuses on using Hili to transport shipments between Aramex hubs and distribution centres. The companies said this model removes the need for airport dependence and shortens turnaround time. Hili can carry 250 kilogrammes and fly up to 700 kilometres, which LODD said makes it suited for varied delivery routes and time-sensitive cargo.
Aramex and LODD will run a pilot in Abu Dhabi to evaluate the use of unmanned aircraft systems for parcel and document deliveries. The study will review operational practicality and the economic case for deploying autonomous aircraft at scale.
LODD Autonomous CEO Rashid Al Manai said, “Aramex has long been a pioneer in adopting advanced technologies to enhance the logistics sector. Through this collaboration, we demonstrate how Hili can be integrated smoothly into existing operations, delivering increased speed, safety, and predictability to middle-mile delivery. This pilot programme is not only a milestone for LODD but also a step towards redefining how autonomous aerial logistics can support high-demand, time-critical networks across the region.”
Nicolas Sibuet, acting group CEO of Aramex, said, “This partnership demonstrates our ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in last- and middle-mile logistics. By working with LODD Autonomous, we aim to test new autonomous technologies that can deliver smarter, faster, and greener outcomes for our customers across the Middle East.”
The pilot has two phases. The first will test parcel deliveries from Aramex’s Musaffah facility to two temporary drone drop points in Abu Dhabi. Couriers will collect shipments from these locations to deliver them to nearby areas. The second phase will expand the test to three more areas using a longer-range drone. This stage will examine performance over longer routes and more complex operations.
Both phases are exploratory and will examine whether autonomous aircraft can improve delivery efficiency. Aramex and LODD will conduct operational workshops to align on processes, regulation, and technical requirements. They will also evaluate a path to commercial deployment if the pilot succeeds.
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office is supporting the pilot as part of its work to develop the emirate’s logistics and mobility ecosystem.
