AerCap orders 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners to meet high demand

In a major development for commercial aviation, aircraft leasing giant AerCap has announced a firm order for 15 new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to meet soaring worldwide demand for modern widebody jets. Revealed at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, the landmark agreement further solidifies AerCap's standing as the largest lessor and owner of the 787 Dreamliner family in the global aviation sector. This latest purchase elevates AerCap’s total 787 Dreamliner portfolio to approximately 140 aircraft, underlining the lessor's ongoing confidence in Boeing's flagship long-haul programme.

A pivotal feature of this new transaction is the inclusion of substitution rights for the larger 787-10 variant. This strategic flexibility permits AerCap to switch its orders to the highest-capacity Dreamliner model should market conditions or specific customer operational strategies demand it. By incorporating the option to transition to the 787-10, AerCap can offer airline clients enhanced seating capacity and improved overall operational flexibility across their international flight networks. As the premier member of Boeing's 787 family, the 787-10 accommodates 50 more passengers than the 787-9, whilst reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 25% compared to older aircraft types it replaces.

The 787 has consistently demonstrated strong operating economics and exceptional performance across a wide range of route networks."

For international airlines grappling with near-term macroeconomic uncertainties, direct capital commitments for brand-new widebody fleets can present substantial financial risks. AerCap’s expansive portfolio offers airlines a flexible solution, allowing carrier partners to renew ageing long-haul fleets or expand existing routes without making immediate, capital-intensive direct purchases. The 787 platform has proven particularly attractive to carriers aiming to meet stringent sustainability targets while maintaining strong operating economics.

Across its service history, the Dreamliner has enabled airlines to launch more than 540 new nonstop city-pair routes that had never previously been served, transporting more than 1.3 billion passengers worldwide.
