LATAM Cargo Group and Andes Integración Logística have completed a salmon shipment with a reduced carbon footprint for AquaChile, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel through a Book and Claim model. The shipment moved from Chile to the United States and included the allocation of more than 350 litres of SAF.

The operation was carried out on March 7, 2026. It marks the first time a certified emissions reduction has been integrated into an international premium salmon air shipment using the Book and Claim model in South America.

The SAF allocation enabled a certified 10 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions linked to the shipment. The cargo consisted of more than three tonnes of premium salmon. The reduction is equivalent to 0.6 tonnes of CO₂ associated with the air transport of the shipment.

The SAF used in the initiative was produced from animal waste residues. According to the methodologies applied, it delivers emissions reductions of about 74.7 per cent compared to fossil fuels. The environmental benefit was attributed to the shipment through the Book and Claim mechanism, which enables verified and traceable emissions accounting without requiring the fuel to be physically used on the same flight.

“This shipment demonstrates that the decarbonisation of air cargo is possible when the entire logistics chain works in tandem," commented Cristina Oñate, Product Sustainability Manager at LATAM Cargo Group. "Our goal is to continue expanding access to concrete, traceable, and verifiable solutions based on the use of SAF so that more South American exporters can reduce the carbon footprint of their international shipments. ”.

Jan-Henrik Hertel, Director of Processes at Andes Integración Logística, said: “This agreement reinforces our role as a strategic freight forwarder. We do not just manage transport from origin to destination; we accompany our clients in fulfilling their sustainability goals. Furthermore, we are proving that the logistics chain can be an active tool for decarbonisation. ”.

AquaChile stated that it is important to be part of initiatives that support more sustainable logistics, especially for exports to the United States. The company noted that such solutions contribute to a more efficient supply chain and introduce environmental improvements.

The initiative brings together the operational role of LATAM Cargo Group and the implementation framework of Andes Integración Logística through its CaRe programme. The collaboration enabled the execution and traceability of emissions reductions for the shipment.

The companies said the initiative demonstrates how coordinated efforts across airlines, forwarders and exporters can deliver measurable outcomes in emissions reduction. It also indicates the potential for scaling SAF use across routes connecting South America with markets such as the United States and Europe.

They added that the development of SAF supply in the region will be important as demand for such solutions grows. The initiative is positioned as a starting point for expanding SAF use across more shipments and trade lanes.
