Velana International Airport (MLE) recorded its highest-ever monthly transshipment cargo volume in July 2026, handling more than 2,000 tonnes during the month. The airport also achieved its highest monthly sea-to-air (S2A) cargo volume since the service began in 2024.

The airport uplifted 621 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo in July, marking a record for the service since its launch two years ago.

July also saw the first sea-to-air cargo shipment originating from Cambodia, expanding Velana International Airport's multimodal connectivity into Southeast Asia.

The airport says these milestones reflect the continued growth of cargo flows through MLE. It adds that customers can expect greater connectivity and more routing options across key markets as additional services and capacity are introduced in the coming months.

Among the developments planned are new freighter services with Raya Airways, including the first freighter route between Penang (PEN) in Malaysia and MLE.

The airport also expects seasonal carriers to increase frequencies in the coming months. In addition, new routes and airlines are scheduled to begin operations during the Winter 2026/27 season, with further details to be announced later.

Velana International Airport is also planning to install Explosive Detection System (EDS) machines at its cargo terminal for the Winter 2026/27 season to improve efficiency and reduce turnaround times.
