Turkish Airlines has announced plans to build what it says will be the world’s largest air cargo terminal and an in-flight catering facility, backed by an investment of 100 billion Turkish liras, about US$2.3 billion.

The flag carrier said in a statement on its Turkish social media platform NSosyal that the new facilities are aimed at boosting its cargo capacity and global competitiveness. The airline added that the investment is expected to generate about 26,000 new jobs.

Turkish Airlines said the exact location of the projects has not been disclosed, but Istanbul, home to two of the country’s main airports — is considered the most likely site for the development.

In its social media post, the airline wrote: “Türkiye is growing, Turkish Airlines is soaring,” and described the plans as a source of pride for the company.

Turkish Airlines is one of the largest carriers in the world, serving more than 130 countries and operating a fleet of over 500 aircraft.

The project follows the airline’s broader efforts to expand cargo and passenger operations, as part of its long-term growth strategy
