Delta Air Lines is to invest up to US$18 million for a new, state-of-the-art air cargo hub at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).

The initiative is a key partnership involving Delta, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA), and Salt Lake City. According to the press release, it aims to modernise the airport's infrastructure to better support the growing demand for logistics and supply chain services in the region.

The new Delta Cargo facility will be housed in a building previously occupied by the United States Postal Service. It is slated for a full renovation and modernisation, replacing Delta’s existing cargo space at SLC to substantially improve operational efficiency.

The new hub is scheduled to open in 2027 and will be fully equipped with specialised features to support diverse cargo needs. These features include extensive warehousing space, refrigerated storage, and advanced cold-chain capabilities essential for handling sensitive goods like pharmaceuticals.

Additionally, the facility will incorporate dedicated areas for shipping and receiving, along with administrative functions, and will include a new customer lobby.

Peter Penseel, Senior Vice President of Delta Cargo said, “Delta is proud to partner with the UIPA and Salt Lake City International Airport to strengthen our cargo operations and better serve our customers in Utah and beyond”.

He further said that the cold-chain focus will be essential for handling high-value, temperature-sensitive goods like pharmaceuticals and perishables.

Deepening global connections

The investment is the latest in a series of expansions by Delta at its key SLC hub. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said, “Over the past year alone, they’ve added additional gates, nonstop routes, and a pilot training center. Now, this cargo facility is yet another investment that supports local businesses, deepens global connections, and builds resilient infrastructure for generations to come”.

Earlier this year, Delta launched two historic direct international routes from SLC: to Lima, Peru, and Seoul, South Korea, further positioning the airport as a critical gateway to the Mountain West.
