February 12, 2018: The Port of Long Beach (POLB) saw its busiest month ever in January as its container volumes reached an all-time high.
Long Beach handled 657,830 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in January, up by 12.9 percent compared to same month last year. It’s for the first time that the port surpassed 600,000 containers in January.
2017 was the busiest year in the port’s 107-years of history, as it moved 7.54 million TEUs.
“January and February is expected to be a busy period, as cargo owners are trying to ship their goods ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, which begins on February 16 across several countries in East Asia,” said Mario Cordero, Executive Director of Port of Long Beach.
On the other hand, imports also hit a record 324,656 TEUs during January, which was 8.6 percent higher than last year. Exports rose by 1.9 percent, to 120,503 TEUs.
“The Port of Long Beach is happy to have a great start in 2018, especially after the successes of last year,” said Lou Anne Bynum, Commission President of Port of Long Beach.
