February 1, 2018: Lufthansa Cargo recently handled its first commercial transport of a SEAT Arona vehicle from Cologne to southern Africa on Airbus 330 Eurowings passenger aircraft for specialist logistics company IQS Group.

While cars that fit on an aircraft pallet can be easily loaded into passenger aircraft in a normal way, however larger vehicles are required to be transported in freighter.

In a bid to facilitate a smoot transport, Lufthansa Cargo and its partner Aircargo Consulting developed a special process to make it possible to transport even larger vehicles in the bellies of Eurowings. The process is expected to benefit automotive customers in terms of higher cost efficiency due to the reduced space requirement for loading.

“The process was finalised after several rounds of meeting after taking into account process description and operational risk analysis,” said Joachim Binte, director sales and handling of Lufthansa Cargo based in Cologne.

“We have commenced our operations in southern Africa, and are planning to expand to other Eurowings destinations,” said Binte.

“With our expertise in loading techniques, we have constructed loading simulator, to meet the need of our customers,” said Matthias Pfeilschifter, commercial director of Aircargo Consulting.
