Jhunjhunwala-backed Akasa Air gets approval, to start operations in 2022
Akasa Air aims to be the nation's most dependable, affordable and greenest airline. The airline will be able to start operations after they receive the AOP, which may take between three to six months. Former Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube is helming Akasa Air.
Akasa Air, the upcoming ultra-low-cost carrier in India, backed by billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has received a no objection certificate (NOC) from the ministry of civil aviation.
The airline, to be operated by SNV Aviation, plans to offer flights across India starting early 2022. It aims to be the nation's most dependable, affordable and greenest airline. Former Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube is heading Akasa Air.
Former IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh, who is on Akasa's board, congratulated Vinay Dube and team on receiving the NOC. “Many congratulations to #VinayDube and Team #AKASA on receiving the NOC from MOCA as it embarks on its journey to offer Indian flyers a warm, efficient, reliable and affordable travel experience with an endeavour to be the nation’s most dependable, affordable and greenest airline,” Ghosh tweeted.
Vinay Dube, CEO of Akasa Air said, “We are extremely happy and grateful to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for their support and for the grant of the NOC. We will continue to work with the regulatory authorities on all additional compliances required to successfully launch Akasa Air.”

The airline will now apply to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for an Air Operator's Permit (AOP). The airline will be able to start operations after they receive the AOP, which may take between three to six months.
With Akasa’s announcement, the aviation industry in India will see the launch of two new airlines next year. Jet Airways, which had ceased operations in April 2019 due to financial crunch and other issues, has also announced plans to start operations in 2022 with new promoters.
