DHL Supply Chain has started construction on a new European Battery Logistics Hub in Holtum, Limburg, as part of its efforts to expand battery and energy storage logistics capabilities across Europe. The facility will provide 17,000 square meters of dedicated space designed for the storage and handling of high-voltage batteries and will operate alongside DHL Supply Chain’s existing automotive logistics site in Holtum. Together, the two facilities will form an integrated logistics campus supporting electric mobility and energy systems throughout Europe. The hub is expected to become operational in early 2027.
The new facility will handle batteries used in electric vehicles as well as battery energy storage systems (BESS), including applications for residential energy storage and solar power solutions. With demand for electric mobility and decentralised energy infrastructure continuing to rise across Europe, DHL Supply Chain is seeing growing interest from automotive, industrial, and energy customers seeking safe, compliant, and scalable battery logistics solutions.
Located strategically in the Netherlands, Holtum is expected to develop into a key European gateway for EV and energy storage logistics, serving markets across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and neighboring regions.
Rainer Haag, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Europe, said, “By expanding our battery logistics capabilities in Holtum and closely linking them with our existing automotive expertise on site, we are creating a scalable one-stop shop solution for the EV sector. This investment directly supports DHL Group Strategy 2030, where New Energy is a decisive growth driver for our business across Europe.”
The Holtum campus is strategically located with strong access to major European transport corridors, including direct links to key motorways connecting the Benelux region and Germany. The site is also located near a container and barge terminal on the Juliana Canal, providing additional waterborne transport options that strengthen supply chain efficiency, resilience, and sustainability for customers across Europe.
The development is part of DHL Group’s Strategy 2030, which aims to support customers operating in fast-growing sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, and circular supply chains. With New Energy positioned as a major growth area, DHL Supply Chain continues to invest in specialized infrastructure and services to help customers expand sustainably across Europe.
John Scherders, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Benelux, commented, “By connecting the new battery operation with our existing automotive and spare parts site right next door, we are creating a center of excellence that allows us to offer seamless logistics and technical services for electric mobility and energy storage customers across Europe”.
