Swissport has opened a state-of-the-art cargo facility at Manchester Airport, doubling its annual handling capacity to 110,000 tons. The new hub, part of Swissport’s global cargo growth strategy, strengthens the UK airport’s role in international trade while supporting regional economic growth and job creation.

The facility, named Box 4, expands Swissport’s operational footprint at Manchester by 67% compared to the previous site. It will begin full operations on 27 October, following an inauguration event on 23 October attended by airline representatives, airport officials, logistics partners, and the regional freight community.

Joe Bellfield, Swissport’s Chief Operating Officer Cargo UK&I, said the expansion allows the company to handle a wide range of goods, from e-commerce shipments and perishables to pharmaceuticals and high-value products, with enhanced safety, security, and efficiency. Stephen Turner, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airport, added that the facility will increase cargo volumes, help local businesses access global markets, and encourage airlines to expand schedules from Manchester.

The new hub features advanced cargo handling systems for faster transfer of Unit Load Devices (ULDs), dedicated Pharma Centres with temperature-controlled environments, specialized racking, dock levellers, and expanded pallet handling areas. These upgrades are designed to optimise operational flow and support high-value, time-sensitive, and temperature-sensitive cargo.

Swissport has also integrated sustainability measures, including an ‘A’ Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, intelligent energy-saving lighting, and infrastructure to transition fully to electric-powered ground service equipment (eGSE) within two years. This aligns with the company’s global goal to electrify 55% of its GSE fleet by 2032 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The facility initially employs 95 team members, all transferred from the previous site, with further recruitment planned as volumes grow. It also offers improved offices, welfare areas, and modern equipment for staff.

This development forms part of Swissport’s wider UK expansion, alongside recent international projects such as the Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Together, these investments reinforce Swissport’s position as a trusted partner for airlines and freight forwarders seeking high-performance, innovative cargo solutions worldwide.
