Saudi Arabia is marking a pivotal moment in its cultural evolution with the launch of its first dedicated art storage facility, built to international museum-grade standards. Set to open on May 24, 2025, in the heart of Jeddah, “The Art Storage” is a collaborative venture between ATHR, one of the Kingdom’s most prominent contemporary art galleries, and Hasenkamp, the German logistics company renowned for its expertise in art transportation and storage.

Strategically located in Jeddah’s Al-Nakheel district, the facility has been designed to provide optimal conditions for storing valuable and sensitive artworks. The site sits on elevated terrain to avoid flood risk and features state-of-the-art climate control with constant temperatures between 20 to 22°C, precise humidity regulation, and gas-based fire suppression systems. With no water involved in fire protection and rigorous dust, privacy, and security measures, the facility meets the stringent standards demanded by international museums and private collectors.

This pioneering depot is not just a passive storage location—it’s an active space where art is protected, studied, and appreciated. Ceiling heights, wide doors, and oversized transit routes have been configured to accommodate monumental artworks. A professionally lit showroom is available for curated previews, and additional areas are dedicated to hosting private events and artist showcases.

Thomas Schneider, Managing Director of Hasenkamp, emphasized the company’s contribution to the project by stating, “We’re applying over 100 years of art logistics expertise. The Jeddah depot is on par with Europe’s top facilities.” Mohammed Hafiz, co-founder of ATHR, sees the project as part of Saudi Arabia’s cultural transformation. “We’re building the Kingdom’s infrastructure for the future of art—not only for storage, but for public engagement.”

The team behind the facility combines more than 50 years of expertise in handling, crating, and installing artwork. Custom-built crate workshops, administrative areas, and private client lounges reinforce the site’s role as both a secure vault and a cultural hub.

With this venture, ATHR and Hasenkamp are not only responding to the logistical needs of a growing arts ecosystem in Saudi Arabia but are also helping shape a new cultural narrative—one where local vision meets global standards.
