Lufthansa Cargo pioneers semiconductor transport and digital Innovations

Lufthansa Cargo has successfully completed a pilot project for the transport of highly sensitive semiconductor production machinery from Japan to Germany, demonstrating its ability to meet the exacting standards of the semiconductor industry. The shipments, conducted in cooperation with DSV, used shock and tilt sensors, temperature monitoring, and strict handling procedures, ensuring the safe delivery of delicate equipment. Three test shipments from Narita via Frankfurt to Dresden were completed between August and September, confirming the effectiveness of the processes.

The project involved close collaboration between Lufthansa Cargo’s sales and industry development teams, the handling team at Frankfurt, and the time:matters Courier Terminal. Each contributed practical expertise to create a comprehensive transport solution. Lufthansa Cargo plans to integrate these specific handling requirements into its booking system for future shipments.

In addition to the semiconductor project, Lufthansa Cargo has launched a digital Pharma Station Map, providing interactive access to over 200 global stations for temperature-sensitive shipments. The map highlights more than 30 CEIV- or GDP-certified stations and over 125 temperature-controlled facilities, enhancing transparency and convenience for customers using Passive Temp Support and Active Temp Control services.

Lufthansa Cargo is also testing new scanning technologies at its warehouses in Frankfurt and Los Angeles to improve operational efficiency. Using computer vision, shipments are measured automatically in real time during handling, reducing discrepancies between declared and actual dimensions and optimising storage, aircraft loading, and transport planning. These trials complement ongoing use of artificial intelligence in the booking process.

Looking ahead, Lufthansa Cargo will attend three major international trade fairs this autumn, showcasing its expertise and innovative solutions. The company will be present at LogiPharma in Boston from 29 September to 1 October, Logistech in Izmir from 8 to 10 October, and MRO Europe in London from 14 to 16 October, inviting visitors to explore its services, digital tools, and sustainable transport offerings.
