Lufthansa Cargo is strengthening its footprint in Southern Europe by integrating ITA Airways’ cargo capacities into its global network. Beginning 16 June 2025, Lufthansa Cargo will start marketing ITA Airways’ bellyhold cargo capacity on select routes under its own AWB (air waybill) prefix, starting with flights from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO).
The partnership marks a significant milestone for both carriers and positions Rome as Lufthansa Cargo’s fifth international hub, following Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Brussels. It also serves as the first major network integration initiative since ITA Airways officially joined the Lufthansa Group earlier this year. The German airline group initially acquired a 41% stake in the Italian carrier, with plans to increase that ownership in the future.
Lufthansa Cargo’s long-term goal is to fully manage and market the cargo capacities of ITA Airways across all continental and intercontinental routes. This phased integration is subject to regulatory approvals and will be implemented gradually. Once fully operational, it will result in nearly a 20% increase in global belly capacity available to Lufthansa Cargo’s customers.
“With Rome joining our hub network, we can offer customers even more flexible and reliable cargo connections in and out of Southern Europe,” said Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo. “This partnership enhances our ability to enable global trade through expanded reach and improved transit times.”
Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Manager of ITA Airways, commented, “We are proud to deepen our collaboration with Lufthansa Cargo and build on the strengths of both networks. Fiumicino has significant untapped cargo potential, and we are eager to unlock it through this partnership.”
ITA Airways currently operates a modern fleet of 99 aircraft, including Airbus A330-900neo, A350-900, and A330-200 for long-haul operations. The airline serves approximately 70 destinations globally and is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic bridge between Europe and emerging markets.
This enhanced cooperation between Lufthansa Cargo and ITA Airways is expected to deliver operational synergies, expanded global coverage, and more competitive shipping options for customers worldwide.
