Global K9 appointed by KLM for canine cargo screening at Amsterdam Schiphol

Global K9 (GK9) has been chosen by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to provide free running explosive detection dogs (FREDDs) at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, marking the screening provider’s first airline partnership in Europe. Four canine teams have been deployed to support KLM Cargo’s operations, ensuring compliance with EU and Dutch safety regulations.

The move forms part of GK9’s broader European expansion strategy. The partnership will also include training in Remote Explosive Scent Tracing (REST), allowing dogs to detect explosive traces in sealed or consolidated cargo without disrupting handling.

Chris Daniels, Chief Commercial Officer at GK9, said the teams were developed to integrate seamlessly within KLM’s high-throughput cargo operations. “Consolidated FREDD teams are a preferred screening option for busy environments like Schiphol and a necessary step in strengthening security at one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs,” he added.

Kester Meijer, Director Operational Integrity, Compliance & Safety at KLM Cargo, highlighted the importance of flexible screening methods. “GK9’s teams offer the mobility and responsiveness needed to operate at scale without interrupting cargo flows, while maintaining high security standards,” he said.

GK9 already works with seven airlines across the US, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, DHL Aviation, LATAM Airlines, Lufthansa, United Airlines, and UPS Airlines. The company’s European growth follows a partnership with a Dutch screening provider and the acquisition of a UK-based canine training firm in late 2024.
