Fraport has opened its first high-speed charging park for battery-powered trucks at Frankfurt Airport, responding to growing demand from freight operators. The new rapid charging facility, located near Gate 31 in CargoCity South, currently offers four charging points, each delivering up to 400 kilowatts of power.

The airport operator said the move follows a survey conducted in spring 2025 among around 250 trucking and logistics companies based at Frankfurt Airport. The survey showed that a steadily increasing share of freight is now being transported by electric vehicles on the road. In response, Fraport launched the charging park to support the shift towards electric trucking.

Michael Kuschel, Manager responsible for power networks and services at Fraport AG, said the airport maintains close contact with its cargo community and regularly asks about their needs. He noted that just two years ago, the industry had indicated that electric drives were not gaining traction. However, by spring 2025, companies reported that they had begun ordering electric vehicles.

The industry now expects a significant shift in 2026, with truck fleets increasingly equipped with battery-powered drives. Kuschel said that at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s main cargo hub, a sufficient number of suitable charging facilities have been provided.

The new charging park forms part of Fraport’s CargoHub master plan, which includes investment in innovative products and freight processes at Frankfurt Airport. The aim is to further develop the airport as Europe’s leading airfreight hub and prepare it for the future by promoting sustainable infrastructure and supporting its transformation into an efficient, climate-friendly and connected logistics hub.

The truck charging facility is also part of a project called ReSkaLa@FRA, described as a living laboratory for scaling up bidirectional charging infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a resolution by Germany’s parliament. By 2027, more than five million euros will have been contributed through its “Electrically Mobile” programme. The funding aims to reduce the cost of transitioning to electromobility, promote innovation in Germany and make transport more climate- and environmentally friendly.

Fraport, together with partner companies, is investing a further 4.1 million euros in various projects at Frankfurt Airport. The plan is to install around 950 charging stations by 2027, including 92 bidirectional stations. These will be able not only to charge vehicle batteries but also to feed stored electricity back into the grid.

Fraport has also committed to achieving Net Zero status in scopes 1 and 2 across all fully consolidated Group companies worldwide by 2045 at the latest. The company said it is addressing not only carbon dioxide but also other climatically relevant greenhouse gases, with the goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality.
