DSV powers the logistics for Vespas 80th anniversary in Rome

In June 2026, the streets of Rome became the beating heart of global motorcycling culture during Vespa Roma 2026: 80 Years Of An Icon. Tens of thousands of passionate enthusiasts from across the globe gathered in the historic Italian capital to celebrate eight decades of design, freedom, and timeless craftsmanship. While the city reverberated with the unmistakable, cheerful hum of vintage and contemporary scooters, a highly complex, multi-layered logistics operation was unfolding seamlessly behind the scenes. At an event of this magnitude, logistics is far more than moving freight from point A to point B; it becomes an essential, living component of the overall guest and brand experience.

Executing an operation of this magnitude was not the work of a single department; it was a masterclass in cross-divisional synergy. The success of the event was the direct result of a joint DSV effort, combining the expertise of both DSV Road and DSV Air & Sea. Spearheaded on the ground by Cristian Pompili, Director, Area North West, DSV Road, Italy, alongside crucial air and ocean transport integration led by Francesco Seracini, Branch Manager, Air & Sea, Prato, Italy, DSV orchestrated a synchronised supply chain across multiple locations, ensuring every moving piece fell into place with absolute precision.

Navigating the scale of a historic metropolis

Executing an event logistics strategy on this scale presents immense challenges in any location, but operating in Rome introduces a unique matrix of urban obstacles. As Cristian Pompili explained, the primary difficulty stemmed from coordinating a massive operational infrastructure within an ancient city defined by tight urban constraints, complex traffic management regulations, and restricted operational zones.

The anniversary celebration was not confined to a single, isolated convention centre; instead, it unfolded across several key locations throughout the capital. The lively Vespa Village at Foro Italico served as the main operational hub. Balancing the constant needs of this central venue alongside secondary sites across the city required micro-level planning and precise spatial mapping. Specialised teams were tasked with simultaneously coordinating dedicated transport fleets, continuous material supply streams, and rapid last-mile deliveries through heavily congested urban corridors. Operating under aggressive timelines, the logistics crew managed hundreds of real-time variables, ranging from sudden traffic diversions to dynamic site access requirements, while maintaining total operational continuity, absolute accuracy, and unwavering reliability throughout every phase of the four-day gathering.

Handling history with white-glove precision

Among the most captivating highlights of the celebration was the showcase of irreplaceable historic and vintage Vespa models, representing key evolutionary chapters in the brand’s post-war history. Transporting these delicate historical treasures demanded a specialised, white-glove logistics strategy vastly different from standard cargo operations. According to Pompili, handling these historic machines was one of the most delicate phases of the entire assignment, requiring a dedicated operational approach from initial transit planning through to final exhibit positioning.

To ensure the absolute preservation of these vintage models, bespoke protective crates and dedicated logistics solutions were engineered specifically to insulate the delicate bodywork and mechanical components from vibration or physical movement during transit. In contrast, modern and contemporary Vespa models were managed under a different operational workflow; they were transported in fully running condition and manoeuvred under their own power directly to their designated display stations.

The logistical scope extended far beyond vehicle positioning alone. DSV was also responsible for managing and moving Piaggio’s extensive workshop technical equipment across multiple strategic locations in the city. By keeping technical support nodes fully equipped and operational throughout the entire event, DSV ensured that mechanics and organisers had immediate access to necessary tools and parts, preventing any technical delays during the festivities.

Synergising division expertise: Road and Air & Sea in action
What set the Vespa Roma 2026 operation apart was the seamless collaboration between DSV's business units. While DSV Road managed the complex web of local distribution, stage positioning, and citywide routing across Rome, DSV Air & Sea played a vital role in managing international transit legs, customs flows, and regional freight movements into Italy.

Under the leadership of Francesco Seracini out of the Prato branch, the Air & Sea division coordinated closely with international partners to streamline the arrival of overseas components, partner displays, and international participant gear. Once these shipments landed in Italy, the Air & Sea team seamlessly handed off custody to Pompili’s Road division for local consolidation and staged dispatch. This end-to-end alignment between air, ocean, and road freight eliminated operational friction, demonstrating how multi-modal integration can solve the complex demands of world-class events.

Dynamic operations and last-mile precision
Supporting thousands of attendees across a multi-day festival requires continuous, highly agile supply chain management. A central pillar of DSV’s operational responsibility was managing the storage, assembly, and distribution of 15,000 bespoke welcome kits created for arriving participants. In an environment defined by intense foot traffic and rapid movement, operational flexibility was paramount.

To maintain steady control over materials and inventory, DSV established a dedicated central warehouse that served as the structural backbone of the entire operation. This facility managed the storage, inventory tracking, and dispatching of daily supplies to event sites. To mitigate potential urban traffic delays between the central hub and the active event footprint, DSV supplemented the main warehouse with a strategic network of localised storage points positioned near key operational zones. Coupled with an efficient internal handling protocol, this network allowed ground teams to execute rapid stock replenishments and maintain a smooth flow of packaging and hardware.

For time-sensitive requests and emergency deliveries, DSV maintained a dedicated last-mile express service operating direct routes between the central warehouse and event locations. Meanwhile, a specialised assembly team took complete ownership of the 15,000 welcome kits. This team managed the process end-to-end: receiving bulk materials, organising component flows, assembling individual kits, incorporating partner items, and executing punctual, accurate distribution to eager participants.

The big picture: logistics as an experience

The successful execution of Vespa Roma 2026 demonstrates how modern event logistics has evolved far beyond standard freight forwarding. As Pompili noted, managing milestone cultural events requires a mindset fundamentally distinct from traditional supply chain management. It is not simply about moving freight across a transport grid; it is about orchestrating an interconnected, living ecosystem in real time under strict time parameters and bespoke handling requirements.

DSV’s primary value lay in its ability to combine these multi-layered operational demands under a single, unified operational framework. By combining the strengths of both the Road and Air & Sea teams, DSV’s personnel and infrastructure functioned as a natural, fluid extension of Piaggio and its event partners. This integrated approach guaranteed operational resilience and total continuity from start to finish, proving that unseen logistics execution is a vital driver of unforgettable brand experiences.

Reflecting on the monumental effort and the shared passion behind the project, Cristian Pompili, Director, Area North West at DSV Road, captured the spirit of the milestone event:

“Over four days, Rome became the home of thousands of enthusiasts from around the world. As the event’s logistics partner, we worked behind the scenes to ensure that every element was in the right place at the right time, from the first supply delivery to the final shipment.

We are proud to have supported Piaggio & C. in bringing to life an event that celebrates an Italian icon recognised worldwide, and to have contributed to creating an experience that will remain in the memories of everyone who shares this passion.”
