Swissport has launched cargo handling operations at Milan Malpensa Airport, marking a strategic expansion in Italy. The new operations began this month in a 4,000 sqm warehouse at the WTC Malpensa complex. The facility will initially handle imports, with plans to add export operations and expand services to general cargo and air freight clients. The company also aims to grow across other segments in Italy, including ground handling, lounge hospitality, and executive aviation.

The new warehouse meets customs certification and security standards and will focus on import handling, pre-customs clearance, and distribution to express delivery companies. A second phase will add export services. “Swissport’s cargo strategy in Italy has always aimed to expand to Malpensa, the primary hub for air cargo operations in Italy,” said Massimo Roccasecca, Cargo Director of Swissport Italia.

Swissport is using this launch as a springboard for broader growth in Italy. “Swissport is deeply committed to the Italian market, leveraging its global expertise to establish a strong cargo handling presence while pursuing growth opportunities in ground handling, lounge hospitality, and executive aviation,” said Marina Bottelli, CEO of Swissport Italia SPA.

Swissport International AG handled around 5 million tonnes of air freight and provided services to 247 million airline passengers globally in 2024. The company operates at 279 airports across 45 countries with about 61,000 employees. Some of its cargo centres are certified for pharmaceutical logistics by IATA’s CEIV Pharma and the British MHRA.

The launch at Milan Malpensa reflects Swissport’s continuing investment in high-potential markets, as it strengthens its network of air cargo and airport ground services worldwide.
