Munich Airport and CHI launch joint cargo venture ‘Cargogate’
It aims to expand CHI’s airline handling capabilities in Germany and improve Munich Airport’s cargo services through a shared approach to logistics operations.

CHI Cargo Group (CHI) and Munich Airport (FMG) merged their cargo operations under a new joint venture called Cargogate, effective January 1, 2025, in Munich. The partnership gives CHI a 74.9 per cent stake and FMG a 25.1 per cent share. It aims to expand CHI’s airline handling capabilities in Germany and improve Munich Airport’s cargo services through a shared approach to logistics operations.
“This partnership reflects a shared vision to strengthen Munich Airport’s cargo offering. For CHI, it’s a key step in expanding our airline handling capabilities in Germany and enhancing our service portfolio in Munich — a commitment to the future of air cargo,” said Kai Domscheit, CEO of CHI Cargo Group.
Since the beginning of operations, Cargogate has improved efficiency and profitability within four months. The company earned Platinum status from a major airline customer for its performance in April and secured early contract extensions with key partners. It also welcomed SCAT Airlines as a new customer.
“We’re proud that we have improved operational and economic performance in a short period of time. The development of Cargogate is further proof of our strong management approach in new terrains and strengthens us for new ventures,” said Dominik Mißkampf, Managing Director of Cargogate.
Cargogate has expanded its offerings to include trucking, customs, and forwarding services. With more than five decades of market presence and experience in special cargo handling, the company aims to strengthen its position in the competitive air freight market.
A new logo has been introduced to represent the merged identity, reflecting CHI’s ownership while retaining a focus on the Munich location.
“This joint venture strengthens Munich’s position as a premier hub for air freight in Europe,” said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport. “By joining forces with CHI Cargo Group, we’re ensuring Munich remains a forward-looking logistics gateway — efficient, reliable, and ready for the future of cargo.”
FMG’s strategy includes growing the cargo business, supported by increasing e-commerce traffic and new air route expansions. Munich Airport is positioning itself for long-term cargo growth through continued investment in infrastructure and process improvements.
CHI Cargo Group operates across Germany and recently expanded into the Netherlands. The company focuses on tailored logistics solutions and a people-first operational approach.
