Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), an aviation and air cargo solutions company, has announced the appointment of Thomas Schürmann as the new Managing Director of Frankfurt Cargo Services (FCS), succeeding Claus Wagner, who will transition into a specialised role within the parent company.
According to the press release, the move comes as WFS expands its footprint in cargo city South, aiming to capture a larger share of the booming e-commerce and freight forwarding markets.
Schürmann joins FCS with over 20 years of international management and cargo operations experience. He most recently served as the head of cargo operations & delivery at Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi, where he oversaw global operations across more than 80 international stations.
By blending his deep-rooted airline perspective with ground-handling expertise, honed during his time at Etihad and his previous tenure at Flughafen Düsseldorf Cargo GmbH, Schürmann is expected to drive a customer-first strategy for FCS.
“With the appointment of Thomas Schürmann, we have significantly strengthened our already outstanding team in Frankfurt and are strongly positioned to achieve our ambitious goals at this important cargo hub,” said John Batten, CEO of WFS EMEAA.
Claus Wagner, who has led FCS since 2019, will remain within the group but shift his focus to the management of WFS’s broader Frankfurt operations. Wagner is credited with navigating FCS through the challenges of the last five years and solidifying its status as the largest airline-independent freight handler at the airport.
In his new role, Wagner will leverage three decades of logistics experience, including previous executive turns at DPD and Europcar, to spearhead WFS’s newest venture.
The leadership transition coincides with a major infrastructure push by WFS. In January, the company commenced operations at a massive 24,000 m² site site in cargo city south. This facility features two dedicated warehouses, two office buildings, and has the capacity to process 100,000 tonnes of import and export freight annually.
Wagner’s primary mission will be to scale these facilities to meet the specific demands of e-commerce clients and freight forwarders, ensuring WFS remains at the forefront of the digital logistics revolution.
