Michael Steen, President and Chief Executive Officer, Atlas Air Worldwide, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

"With over 30 years of experience in aviation and logistics, Steen’s appointment underscores his leadership at Atlas, where he has driven the company's focus on safety, strategic expansion and operational excellence," says an official release from Atlas.

As a member of the IATA Board of Governors, Steen will help shape industry standards, influence aviation policy, and advance initiatives supporting global connectivity and a safe, secure, and sustainable aviation sector, the release added.

“I am honoured to join the IATA Board of Governors at a pivotal time for the aviation industry,” says Steen. “The role of aviation and air cargo in particular has never been more critical to the global economy. I look forward to collaborating with industry leaders to support our shared goals, including aviation safety, resilience, sustainability, and operational efficiency that benefit our customers and communities worldwide.”

Steen also serves on the Board of Directors at CHC Helicopters and has served as Chairman of IATA’s Cargo Advisory Council, the release added.

Steen's appointment to the IATA Board is w.e.f. October 22, 2024. Peter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo is the Chair of the Board that includes 32 members.

IATA has announced Luis Gallego Martin, Chief Executive Officer, IAG (representing IBERIA), will serve as Chair from June 2025, following Elbers’ term.

The next AGM of IATA will be held in New Delhi in June 2025, and will be hosted by IndiGo.
