Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has taken a significant step in advancing sustainable operations by becoming the first strategic collaborator of Shell in its renewable diesel initiatives. This partnership underscores Hactl’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with global efforts to decarbonise air cargo logistics.
The collaboration, officially recognised by Shell, focuses on introducing sustainable fuel alternatives into Hactl’s ground operations. By incorporating renewable diesel, derived from sustainable feedstocks, the initiative aims to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions from ground support equipment and logistics vehicles at Hong Kong International Airport.
Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of Hactl, emphasised the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “We continuously seek innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact, and partnering with Shell marks a crucial milestone in our green journey. This collaboration is an important step toward achieving more sustainable cargo handling operations.”
The aviation industry has been under increasing pressure to adopt greener practices, with stakeholders across the supply chain exploring alternative energy sources. Shell’s renewable diesel, produced from waste-based feedstocks, offers a drop-in solution that can seamlessly replace conventional fossil diesel without requiring engine modifications. This allows for an immediate reduction in carbon emissions, supporting Hong Kong’s broader sustainability goals.
This initiative aligns with Hactl’s long-term environmental strategy, which includes efforts to enhance energy efficiency, implement carbon reduction measures, and invest in sustainable logistics technologies. The company has already introduced electric vehicles and energy-efficient equipment within its operations and continues to explore further initiatives to support the global push for net-zero emissions.
For Shell, the collaboration with Hactl represents an opportunity to expand its renewable energy solutions within the aviation sector. The company has been actively working with various partners to scale up the adoption of sustainable fuels and drive industry-wide decarbonisation efforts.
As air cargo volumes continue to grow, the need for sustainable logistics solutions becomes more urgent. The partnership between Hactl and Shell is expected to set a precedent for other industry players to follow, reinforcing the importance of alternative fuels in achieving greener aviation logistics.
With this latest move, Hactl further cements its position as an industry leader in sustainability, taking proactive steps to contribute to a lower-carbon future while maintaining its operational excellence in air cargo handling.
