Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 423,000 tonnes of cargo in April 2026, marking a 4.9% increase compared with the same month last year, according to figures released by Airport Authority Hong Kong. Cargo flight movements also rose 4.3% year on year to 6,605 flights during the month.

The airport said cargo growth in April was driven mainly by transshipment traffic, which increased 20.2% year on year. Imports also recorded growth of 6.5%, while the decline in exports narrowed to 0.3% compared with the same period last year.

Regional cargo performance remained uneven during the month. Growth in Europe and Southeast Asia helped offset weaker demand from North America and the Middle East. The airport said the Middle East market continued to face pressure from ongoing regional conflicts.

Cargo handled at HKIA reached 1.63 million tonnes during the first four months of 2026, up 3.7% from the corresponding period last year. Flight movements for the same period rose 5.1% year on year to 135,090.

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA processed 5.12 million tonnes of cargo, reflecting year-on-year growth of 2.9%. Cargo flight movements during the same period stood at 79,475, up 1.8% from the previous year.

The airport also reported that unloaded cargo volumes rose 10.4% year on year in April to 119,000 tonnes, while loaded cargo increased 2.8% to 304,000 tonnes.

Separately, HKIA received the Platinum Award in the Airports Council International (ACI) Green Airports Recognition 2026 programme for its “HKIA Flood Resilience Studies” project in the category for airports handling more than 40 million passengers annually.

Julian Lee, Executive Director, Finance of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said, “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award. As Hong Kong faces heavier rain and typhoons, this award affirms AAHK’s strong commitment to climate resilience at HKIA. The project findings further enhanced our climate risk management.”

The Green Airports Recognition programme, organised by ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, focuses on environmental practises aimed at reducing aviation’s impact on the environment. This year’s theme centred on climate change adaptation.
