Swissport has opened a new 5,500 square metre import hub at Liege Airport in Belgium as part of its plan to expand its e-commerce logistics network in Europe. The company said the warehouse is dedicated to handling import parcels and is built to manage high volumes with a daily throughput capacity of up to 300 tonnes. The addition increases Swissport’s total e-commerce footprint at Liege to 9,000 square metres.
The new site supports the full chain of import handling processes. These include cargo collection, shuttling between the airport and the warehouse, breakdown, scanning, sorting, and loading for last-mile delivery. Swissport said Liège continues to grow as a major centre for online retail cargo.
“Liège has established itself as one of Europe’s most important cargo hubs, particularly for online retail,” said Dirk Goovaerts, CEO Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and Global Cargo Chair, Swissport. “With this investment, we are enhancing our ability to deliver fast, data-driven, and sustainable logistics solutions for our airline and integrator partners. It’s another step in building scalable capacity where our customers need it most.”
The facility integrates customers’ Warehouse Management Systems with its CargoSpot platform to provide real-time visibility and data accuracy. The warehouse is bonded and set up for cross-dock operations. “Our expanded footprint allows us to process higher volumes while maintaining the reliability and precision our customers expect,” said Wilfried Jans, Managing Director of Swissport Belgium. “The setup gives us the flexibility to manage complex, piece-intensive flows with full digital integration and a highly skilled team.”
Frédéric Brun, Head of Commercial Cargo and Logistics at Liege Airport, said: “We are delighted to see Swissport expanding its operations at Liege Airport, further reinforcing LGG’s position as a leading European hub for e-commerce and express logistics. Swissport is a key partner in our cargo ecosystem, and its continued investment here reflects both the confidence in Liège’s strategic role and our shared commitment to providing efficient, innovative, and sustainable logistics solutions for global customers.”
The Liege hub follows its global sustainability standards and runs on paperless, digital workflows. There are recycling programmes for cardboard, wood, and plastics to reduce waste.
The company said the expansion is part of its global strategy to build scalable e-commerce capacity across major trade gateways. Its network includes hubs in Brussels, Milan, Basel, New York, JFK, and Shanghai. Swissport said the Liege investment strengthens its position as a partner for airlines and freight forwarders seeking consistent service and connectivity across markets.
