Emirates SkyCargo partners with LODD Autonomous on future cargo drones
The MoU focuses on testing autonomous VTOL aircraft and exploring commercial use to support the UAE’s logistics vision.;
Emirates SkyCargo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LODD Autonomous to explore next generation air cargo solutions using autonomous drone technology, aiming to support the UAE’s goal of becoming a top five global logistics hub.
The MoU was signed during the 2025 Dubai Airshow by Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, and Rashid Al Manai, Chief Executive Officer of LODD Autonomous. The two homegrown companies will work together to validate the use of VTOL aircraft across Emirates SkyCargo’s global network through feasibility studies, regulatory engagement and live demonstrations. The airline will support LODD’s experimental operations until the end of 2027, offering insights to guide design and development for possible commercial deployment in regional and global markets.
The agreement follows the first successful test flight of LODD’s Hili, an unmanned, hybrid heavy-lift cargo aircraft built in Abu Dhabi. Hili operates fully autonomously and can carry payloads of up to 250 kilograms across distances of up to 700 kilometres. Emirates SkyCargo will consider Hili for integration into its ground fleet to support operations across its dual airport hub.
Badr Abbas said the partnership reinforces the airline’s commitment to innovation and developing solutions that address customer challenges. He added that emerging technologies will shape the next era of logistics and Emirates SkyCargo intends to lead that shift by investing its expertise into impactful product development.
Rashid Mattar Al Manai stated that the collaboration combines LODD Autonomous’s advanced technologies with the UAE’s focus on building safe, scalable and sustainable logistics capabilities. He said the partnership will help accelerate drone-powered delivery, reduce delivery times and strengthen the UAE’s global logistics standing while ensuring high safety and regulatory standards.
Emirates SkyCargo continues to advance the logistics sector, connecting over 150 destinations with a widebody fleet of more than 260 aircraft. Earlier this year, it launched Emirates Courier Express, a door-to-door delivery service designed to enhance cross-border eCommerce through the use of the airline’s cargo expertise and passenger network.
LODD Autonomous, based in Abu Dhabi, is developing unmanned cargo aircraft and AI-enabled software to simplify logistics, reduce costs, improve sustainability and speed up delivery. Supported by the Advanced Technology Research Council, the development and potential deployment of Hili with Emirates SkyCargo highlights the UAE’s investment in strengthening its national technology ecosystem.
