Vienna Airport handled 154,001 tonnes of freight in the first six months of 2025, a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth, equal to an additional 12,822 tonnes, was driven by e-commerce demand, new long-haul connections, and higher belly cargo volumes.

“We recorded strong growth in April (+13%) and May (+15%) in particular. Vienna Airport is particularly well established as a freight hub between Asia and Southeast Europe,” said Julian Jägre, joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport.

Michael Zach, Senior Vice President of Ground Handling & Cargo Operations at Flughafen Wien AG, added: “Vienna Airport sees further growth potential in e-commerce, especially in the area of pure cargo connections. We are well equipped for this growth: the handling equipment is in place, freighter positions have been completed and are located in the immediate vicinity of the cargo warehouse. We expect a further increase regarding imports to Europe in the second half of 2025.”

From January to June 2025, belly cargo increased by 9,476 tonnes to 67,070 tonnes, up 16% year-on-year. This offset a slight decline in pure air freight tonnage. In May alone, belly cargo rose 25% to 12,413 tonnes compared to the same month last year.

The Pharma Handling Centre also handled more shipments, with volumes rising 12% to 2,040 tonnes. Imports through Vienna Airport reached 81,162 tonnes, up 4%, while exports grew 15% to 72,839 tonnes in the first half of the year.

Located strategically in Europe, Vienna Airport serves as a key cargo hub for Central and Eastern Europe. It offers 24/7 operations, ten parking bays for large freighters such as Boeing 747 and Antonov 124 aircraft, and fast road feeder connections to regional business centres within 24 to 48 hours.
