Teesside International Airport has secured a landmark air freight deal with UK-based carrier European Cargo, marking a major expansion of cargo operations at the airport.

Under the agreement, European Cargo will establish a new operational base at the airport and begin operating five weekly long-haul freight flights to China. The service is expected to handle up to 375 tonnes of cargo each week, creating new export capacity for businesses across the region.

The multi-million-pound deal will see the carrier operate its Airbus A340-600 aircraft from Teesside. The move is aimed at strengthening international trade links and improving direct access to global markets for manufacturers and exporters in the North of England.

Airport officials said the agreement represents a significant milestone in the airport’s growth plans and reinforces its position as a developing logistics hub. The new cargo base is also expected to support job creation and attract further commercial activity to the airport’s business park.

European Cargo said establishing operations at Teesside forms part of its strategy to expand its UK footprint and enhance connectivity between Britain and key international trade centres.

The development builds on recent private-sector investment at the airport, including new aviation-related facilities and infrastructure projects designed to support long-term growth.
