Swissport introduces new electric vehicles in Basel and Geneva
Swissport plans to invest over €1billion in electric vehicles and equipment over the next decade
Swissport has announced the launch of new electric vehicles at its facilities at the Basel and Geneva airports.
At Swissport Basel, the share of electric ground support equipment (eGSE) is set to increase to 49 percent by the end of 2024. Swissport Geneva, which already has a fleet with 53 percent electric vehicles, plans to further expand its electric vehicle portfolio to 58 percent by the end of 2024, according to the press release from Swissport.
With the delivery of new electric vehicles, Swissport is making significant progress towards its sustainability goals. In line with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the company is committed to achieving short-term CO2 reduction targets and transitioning to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, says the release.
“With the introduction of new electric vehicles, we are accelerating our transition to more sustainable operations. This investment not only strengthens our fleet, but also underscores our pivotal role in the ecological transformation of the airline industry," says Bruno Stefani, CEO, Swissport Switzerland, Italy and France.
Swissport aims to achieve 55 percent electric vehicles in its global fleet by 2032, targeting a 42 percent reduction in CO2 from operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2) compared to 2022 levels. In line with its electrification policy, Swissport prioritises investing in eGSE and only purchases fossil-fueled models when no alternatives are available.
Over the next three years, Swissport will gradually increase, up to 80 percent, all new motorised GSE acquisitions and replacements to be electric. It plans to invest over €1billion in electric vehicles and equipment over the next decade, the release added.
