A B777 freighter of Lufthansa Cargo was welcomed in Chennai with a water salute, further strengthening its position in the growing Indian air cargo market.

"From now on, we operate two weekly flights with our B777F between Chennai and Frankfurt," André Schulz, Head of Region Middle East, Africa, South Asia & CIS, Lufthansa Cargo wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Lufthansa Cargo, in response to strong demand, has increased freighter capacities to/from India with the beginning of the winter flight plan 2024/25.

For the winter schedule, the cargo carrier is increasing its frequencies to destinations in India and China to accommodate the continued growth in e-commerce shipments and other goods. "The increase in frequencies is primarily due to the entry into service of the 18th B777F freighter in the fleet, which was transferred from the Boeing plant in Seattle to Frankfurt in mid-August."

Lufthansa Cargo is increasing its weekly freighter capacity to Mumbai by one flight per week. Chennai will be served twice in combination with Hyderabad and Mumbai.

“The two weekly flights to Chennai are operated by Lufthansa Cargo while all other flights to India are operated by Aerologic. On flights operated by Aerologic, 100 percent of the capacity belongs to Lufthansa Cargo.”

Lufthansa Cargo reported a 3,700 percent increase in operating profit (adjusted EBIT) at €38 million for the third quarter of 2024 compared to €1 million in the same period last year in the traditionally seasonally weak third quarter for air freight.

The trend confirms the anticipated normalisation in the air freight market, says an official release. "Furthermore, Lufthansa Cargo is optimally positioned to benefit from strong e-commerce business with Asia, which has prompted Lufthansa Cargo to shift capacity from the transatlantic to the Asia/Pacific region."
