IATA sees airlines carrying 71.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2026
Industry body outlines air freight outlook, CORSIA climate financing and planned investment in sustainable aviation fuel

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said airlines are aiming to carry 71.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2026, highlighting the continued role of air freight in supporting global trade and economic connectivity.
The cargo target is part of IATA’s outlook for 2026, which outlines the aviation industry’s commitment to maintaining global connections while advancing sustainability goals. Alongside passenger operations, air cargo remains a critical component of the sector’s overall performance.
IATA also said airlines are working to generate $1.7 billion in climate financing through CORSIA, the global scheme designed to offset aviation emissions, as part of broader efforts to address environmental responsibilities.
In addition, airlines plan to invest $4.5 billion in Sustainable Aviation Fuel, reinforcing the industry’s push to reduce the environmental impact of flight operations, including air cargo services.
According to IATA, the outlook for air cargo in 2026 reflects a balance between growth, operational resilience and sustainability, as airlines prepare to meet demand while aligning with climate commitments.
