Kitakyushu Airport, in collaboration with DHL Global Forwarding Japan, has successfully completed the transport of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, marking the largest and most technically demanding cargo operation ever handled by the airport.

The shipment, carried out at the end of last year, involved transporting approximately 180 tonnes of semiconductor manufacturing equipment from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands to Kitakyushu Airport in Japan using a dedicated large freighter aircraft.

To meet regional transport demand, the airport began efforts in 2023 to handle imports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The initiative was led mainly by DHL Global Forwarding Japan along with Korean Air. The airport worked closely with companies responsible for ground handling of regular cargo flights to build a strong handling system.

Experienced staff from the organisations involved collaborated to design and execute detailed transport strategies to ensure the safe and efficient movement of the equipment. This included risk assessments as well as measures to manage temperature and humidity and reduce vibration throughout the journey from Amsterdam to Kitakyushu. These efforts helped establish a stable operational framework for handling such specialised cargo.

Karsten Michaelis, CEO North Asia at DHL Global Forwarding and President and Representative Director of DHL Global Forwarding Japan, said semiconductors are the backbone of modern technology and the company has built a strong framework to support this supply chain with precision and expertise.

He added that by establishing a dedicated office at Kitakyushu Airport, supported by its Semiconductor Specialist Team and working closely with airport authorities and Korean Air, DHL created an integrated structure combining infrastructure development with operational collaboration. He also said the company’s global CapX Qualification Programme and standardised processes across locations, including Narita International Airport, Kansai International Airport and Kitakyushu Airport, help ensure consistency, safety and operational excellence.

The Kitakyushu Airport Promotion Council, which includes Fukuoka Prefecture and Kitakyushu City, is also supporting the development of semiconductor-related cargo flows through subsidy programmes. The council provides financial support to businesses transporting international air cargo as well as subsidies for shipments involving semiconductor manufacturing equipment and related items.
